Chisel
Status : Bench Tested
A fundamental hand tool featuring a sharp bevel-edged steel blade attached to a handle, designed to cut, pare, or carve wood when pushed by hand or struck with a wooden mallet. These are typically made of High-carbon steel.

My Workbench Note:
Back in 2024, during my very first woodworking lessons, my tutor Marcus recommended getting a solid core set of four sizes: 3mm, 6mm, 12mm, and 18mm. Based on his advice, I chose Narex—a brand widely recognised for sitting right in the mid-to-upper-mid-range spectrum, delivering professional-grade performance at an incredibly accessible price point.
They have completely lived up to the hype. Having used them regularly on the bench for a few years now, they have proven exceptionally reliable, holding a razor-sharp edge across both hardwoods and softwoods without chipping or premature dulling.
Quick Beginner Takeaways & Practical Safety Tip
Essential Setup Tweak: When you buy a new pair or set of chisels, take a fine metal file or abrasive card and lightly break (round off) the sharp side edges along the length of the blade before taking them to the bench. It takes just a minute and prevents unnecessary slice cuts to your hand.
Core Set Versatility: Starting with just four core sizes 3mm, 6mm, 12mm and 18mm covers 90% of all standard joinery tasks without overspending on large, unused sets.
⚠️ Safety Warning (The Edge Issue): The long side lands/bevel edges on brand-new Narex chisels come out of the box surprisingly sharp. I learned the hard way after cutting my fingers multiple times while guiding paring cuts.
⚠️ WARNING: Never Use a Steel Hammer on a Woodworking Chisel : Always use a wooden, brass, or rubber mallet when striking a chisel handle—never a standard steel claw hammer. Using a metal hammer will split, mushroom, and shatter wooden handles, and can quickly destroy the striking caps of modern composite handles. Metal-on-metal striking can also cause steel fragments to chip off and fly as high-velocity shrapnel. Reserve steel hammers exclusively for driving nails, metal tools.
