Finished Reading : Woodworking School: A Project-by-Project Course for the Creative Woodworker by Peter Collenette.
Generously gifted by Neil from SFWW a few months ago, I finally found the time to dive in. Despite being published in 1984, the detailed techniques and fundamentals hold up exceptionally well today.
This book broadly covers
- Core foundations : Timber, wood movement, workshop setup, safety, project planning/basic drawing.
- Tools & techniques : Hand tools, maintenance, power tool basics, finishing techniques, basic joinery
- Projects: step-by step builds from simple household items to advanced cabinet making
Finished Reading : Wood Boxes – Design and Technique by Tony Lydgate.
Another book generously gifted by Adam Fricker from SFWW recently. I have to pass this book over soon, so I blocked out some time to read through the contents.
The book contains design details for 40 boxes in all sorts of shapes and sizes you can imagine—an excellent, highly inspirational collage of work that reminds you the sky is the limit for box making.
It broadly covers:
Featured Collection: A diverse showcase of 40 individual box designs from various skilled builders. This book broadly covers:
Foundations & Basics: An interesting introduction that not only explores what a box really is, but also covers getting started with tools, wood types, milling, sanding, assembly, finishing, final touches, and workshop safety.
The 10 boxes that caught my attention and are likely to make my project to-do list are:
- Ying Yang Box
- Dry Fly Box
- Maple Treasury
- Drawer Box
- Contemporary Silver Chest
- Winged Vessel
- Pyramid Box
- Lap Desk
- Diamond Plate Jewellery Box
- Tower Box
I keep adding more key-words to the Glossary as I read through the books !
