Welcome, I’m Ram.
By day, I navigate the structured digital world, but once I step into the workshop, it’s all about timber, hand tools, sharpeners, sawdust, mistakes and the occasional cut. This site is my open garage door—a place where I document what happens when ideas, tools and materials come together, without the polish of a commercial showcase.
Why I started making
I’ve always had an itch to build things with my own hands. Woodworking was where I started, but I’m increasingly discovering that what attracts me isn’t simply wood. It’s the process of taking an idea, experimenting with materials and tools, making mistakes, and eventually turning something in my head into something I can hold.
I am not an expert
If you are looking for flawless master-craftsman tutorials, you might be in the wrong place! I am very much a self-taught maker (with lots of support from fellow makers) navigating the space between beginner to intermediate to expert skills.
I don’t hide the missteps. You’ll find plenty of splintered end-grain, misaligned miters, gloopy lacquer passes, and drill bits skating off brass wire right alongside the finished builds. Documenting the mistakes is how I learn, and hopefully, it saves you from making the exact same ones at your bench.
Navigating the site
Here is a quick guide on how everything is organised across the site:
- Blog : My Journey – Reflective articles, workshop notes on the learning process, visiting experts, overcoming hesitation and the mindset of a hobbyist & My Projects – Step-by-step breakdowns of actual builds – from simple step stools made of reclaimed bed slats to delicate marquetry pieces and brass-laid pendants.
- The Hub (Glossary & Library): A living dictionary and resource index. The Glossary tracks tools, timbers, and terms, moving them from Book Study (theory) to Bench-Tested (real-world practice) complete with safety tips and lessons learned. The Workbench Library logs the actual woodworking books I study, with convenient links to places like Amazon if you want to pick up a copy for your own shelf.
What you can expect here
- Honesty about what actually happens on a hobbyist’s/ beginner workbench
- Practical takeaways on tool control, finishing etc
- Deep dives into workshop experiments, budget work holding and tool hacks
- Detailed breakdowns of both my wins and my total failures
- Occasionally, a project that actually turns out looking pretty good !
Take a look around, check out the dictionary, subscribe and enjoy the build process!
