A Festive Spark: Joining the Southern Fellowship of Woodworkers & Meeting Paul Sellers

My path toward a wider woodworking community truly began during a festive workshop back in December 2025, where I was busy building a Christmas-themed miniature village diorama.

It was there that I had a chance conversation with Jonty at Ash & Co, who kindly recommended that I check out the Southern Fellowship of Woodworkers (SFWW). He introduced me to Timothy McGinn (Tim) of SFWW. I raised my request to Tim that December, and he got back to me quickly, graciously sharing all the necessary information and guiding me through the process. By January 2026, I had officially joined!

Becoming a member of the fellowship marked a major turning point in my craft journey—it opened the door to exploring entirely new dimensions of woodworking and introduced me to an incredible network of experts, mentors, and fellow makers who continue to inspire my work today.

A Surprise Guest: Meeting Paul Sellers at X-Barn

Joining SFWW was already a milestone, but come January 2026, we received incredible news: Paul Sellers—one of my absolute favorite woodworking YouTubers—was showing up for a session!

By February 2026, I had the privilege of meeting him in person at X-Barn during the monthly SFWW gathering.

A quick selfie with Paul Sellers—an absolute highlight of my woodworking journey!

Having followed Paul’s work, tutorials, and teachings online for over an year, standing in the same room and meeting him face-to-face was an unforgettable experience.

Wisdom, Tools, and Craftsmanship

During his lecture, Paul combined practical woodworking wisdom with the deeper philosophy of hand-tool craftsmanship that has inspired countless makers across the globe.

What stood out to me most was his genuine humility, his infectious passion for teaching, and his unwavering belief that fine woodworking isn’t reserved for a elite few—it is completely accessible to anyone willing to develop their skills through patience and practice.

Seeing the traditional hand tools layout on display—planes, saws, chisels, gauges, and handmade wooden boxes—was a masterclass in efficiency and respect for the craft.

Community & Inspiration

Beyond hearing Paul speak, the gathering was filled with opportunities to connect with fellow members and admire some remarkable projects on display, from intricate turned-wood lamps to creative natural-edge timber sculptures.

Incredible craftsmanship on display by fellowship members.

The event wasn’t just a chance to learn from one of the most respected hand-tool woodworkers of our time; it was a powerful reminder of how rewarding it is to belong to a community of makers who share the exact same enthusiasm for traditional hand skill.

Meeting Paul and joining SFWW remains one of the absolute highest highlights of my woodworking journey so far!
