Right before Christmas in December 2025, my wife and I decided to take a little break from the usual holiday rush and do something creative together. We booked a two-hour winter session at Ash & Co Workshop, where the goal was to build and decorate our very own Christmas-themed miniature village dioramas.

I’ve spent time working with full-sized timber offcuts and garage tools, but this session pushed me into a completely new territory: the detailed world of miniature model making.
Big Ideas in a Small Space
While two hours might sound like plenty of time, crafting a tiny universe from scratch keeps your hands moving fast! The workshop gave us a fantastic introduction to diorama creation, blending pre-cut wood pieces, painting, wiring up fairy lights, and layering decorative details.
It was amazing to see how simple materials like small wooden blocks, snow paste (from saw-dust), miniature bottle-brush trees, buttons, and tiny signs could be combined to tell a visual story.
The North Pole Elf Village scene
My diorama leaned heavily into the North Pole spirit, complete with a “Santa’s Workshop,” a “North Pole Post Office,” a snowball pile, and a little ice-skating ring illuminated by colorful, festive micro-LEDs.
Two Villages, Two Styles
One of the best parts of the session was seeing how differently my wife and I approached our builds on the exact same prompt:
A side-by-side look at our two distinct village layouts.
The North Pole Hub: My setup featured colorful, festive LEDs, signboards, and bustling village spots like the Elf Village and Post Office.
Cozy Village Street: My wife created a charming, warm-toned street scene featuring “Village Stores,” cozy cottage facades accented with button details, a cute little snowman, and warm white fairy lights strung along streetlamps.
When we placed them side-by-side back home, they linked up to create one continuous, glowing winter wonderland!
Beyond the Woodwork
As someone learning the craft of working with timber, this session gave me a brand-new appreciation for scale and storytelling. It showed me that craftsmanship isn’t always about perfect square joints or heavy furniture—sometimes it’s about scale, texture, light, and bringing a sense of playfulness to raw materials.
More than just two new festive decorations for our living room, this workshop was a wonderful memory shared with my wife and a fun first step into the world of miniature art. I have a feeling this won’t be the last diorama to come off my journey!
