With a few remaining lengths of Sapele sitting around the workshop, I realized I couldn’t resist the ultimate rite of passage in woodworking: making chopping boards. It seems every maker on YouTube tackling hard timber eventually builds a batch, and I was no exception!
I decided to keep the builds relatively simple yet practical. For the rectangular boards, I edge-glued pieces of Sapele together using dowels for alignment, added a clean drilled hanging hole, and sanded them to a smooth, food-safe finish. For another piece, I swept the edges into a elegant, paddle-shaped serving board designed for charcuterie or bread.

As the boards took shape, a new bug bit me—the desire to brand my work with an official mark. Naturally, this sent me down another YouTube research rabbit hole. I designed a custom maker’s emblem (featuring “The House of Woodpecker” logo) and ordered a traditional brass branding iron. Rather than opting for an electric version, I went old-school with a heavy metal rod designed to be heated directly over a kitchen gas stove flame.

There is an incredible sense of satisfaction in waiting for that brass head to glow, pressing it carefully into the corner of raw Sapele, and watching a plume of sweet wood smoke rise as your custom emblem burns into the timber.

Would I recommend new builders starting out with cutting boards and stove-heated branding irons? Why not? They are accessible, low-risk, and remarkably forgiving projects that teach you the core fundamentals of timber selection, grain alignment, flattening, and edge-finishing. Adding that simple, hand-burned stamp at the end gives you an instant, immense surge of pride in your work. It was a modest batch of projects, but stamping that heat-branded mark onto finished wood felt like a major milestone in turning a hobby into a true maker’s identity.
Behind the Mark: Crafting “The House of Woodpecker” Logo
You might ask what the story is behind this logo. Arriving at a brand name that feels right takes a sizable amount of time and reflection. I’ve always had a real love for the woodpecker—a bird known for its precision, tireless craftsmanship, and natural connection to wood. After revolving around various ideas for a while, I landed on The House of Woodpecker.
Thanks to modern AI tools, the design process was surprisingly swift. After just a few hours of back-and-forth prompting and tweaking, I had the perfect emblem: a bold, classic circular seal featuring a detailed woodpecker perched on a branch.

I took the high-contrast, black-and-white vector design and sent it off to custom branding tool makers. Surprisingly, the tool originated all the way from the US! Within a week or so, the physical brass stamp attached to its heavy rod—my new “wand”—arrived at my door. Holding that custom brass head in my hand made the whole journey feel real, transforming a simple passion into a distinct, recognizable identity stamped directly into the timber.
