Craftsmanship, Community, and Piston Clocks: Inside the Spelthorne Shed Annual Open Event

Having officially joined Spelthorne Shed earlier this month, I was eager to experience my very first annual Shed event. Walking up to the gathering, it was immediately clear that this wasn’t just a showcase—it was a true celebration of community, shared passion, and decades of accumulated making skill. Seeing so many shedders gathered under the summer sun, chatting with visitors, and proudly displaying their handiwork was a fantastic sight.

Inspiration Across the Tables

  • Finely Turned Acrylic & Hardwood Gifts: The woodturning bench featured beautifully finished pens, custom acrylic keychains, turned bowls, mortar and pestle sets, and sleek letter openers. The high-gloss finish on the acrylics alongside the natural grain of the hardwoods showed a high degree of lathe mastery.
  • Intricate Engineering & Model Making: I spent a considerable amount of time admiring a detailed toy steam train locomotive and its accompanying “Coronation Ark” transport wagons. The level of precision required to build near-working mechanical models from scratch is incredible—a real testament to the patience and mechanical aptitude in the Shed.
  • Mixed-Material & Upcycled Ingenuity: Aligned closely with my interest in expanding into metalworking, the piston-driven clocks built from upcycled engine connecting rods and turned wooden bases were an absolute highlight. Blending machined automotive aluminum with warm timber is a fantastic example of mixed-media design done right.
  • Laser Work & Decorative Crafts: Beyond the heavy stationaries, tables were filled with intricate laser-cut boxes, decorative 10th-anniversary plaques, turned wooden mushrooms, and carved birdhouses.

Reframing What’s Possible at the Bench

Attending an event like this as a new member is immensely inspiring. It’s one thing to see machines sitting idle in a workshop during quiet morning sessions; it is entirely another to see the polished, creative outputs born from those very same tools.

Beyond the technical inspiration, the afternoon was a reminder of why these spaces matter so deeply. Whether sharing tea under the marquee tents or discussing the mechanics of a model fairground ride, the atmosphere was rooted in encouragement, resourcefulness, and pride of craftsmanship. I left the event more energized than ever to work through my machine sign-offs and begin my next set of projects at Spelthorne Shed.
