Learning the craft from the workbench up—one tool, joint, technique, process and wood species at a time.
Welcome to the Hub!
Whether you’re holding a hand plane for the first time or trying to figure out why your freshly cut board just warped across your bench, woodworking can feel like learning a completely new language.
I’m not a master craftsman with 40 years of experience—I’m a fellow maker documenting my journey from square one. I built this knowledge base to keep track of everything I’m learning, from tricky timber acronyms (what on earth is S4S?) to grain anatomy, tool sharpening, and traditional joinery.
Inside each section, you’ll find plain-English breakdowns, notes straight from my workbench, and direct links to the gold-standard books, databases, and experts who helped me figure it out.

Important Note: Think of this section as my personal workbench notebook. Everything listed here comes from things I’ve heard in lessons, picked up watching YouTube guides, read in books or magazines or other sources. Big thanks to my teachers and the entire community that I am interacting with for helping me make sense of it all!
How I build my glossary: Whenever I encounter a new woodworking term—whether in a book, during a video tutorial, or chatting at the workbench—I jot it down, research it, and translate it into plain English for this master index. Some entries are concise quick-references, while others offer deeper breakdowns. Coming from an IT background, digging through resources to untangle new concepts is second nature to me, so this glossary is constantly growing as I continue to learn.
To help support this site, some tool / consumable or book recommendations and references in these entries may contain affiliate links, meaning I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them (at no extra cost to you.
How I Structure These Reference Entries.
- Plain-English Basics: What the term, tool, or technique means without overly dense textbook jargon.
- Workbench Notes: Real-world feedback on what worked, what confused me, or what surprised me when I tried it at my own bench.
- Curated Resources: Direct links to the authoritative books (like Paul Sellers) and databases (Wood Database) where you can dive as deep as you want.
